Karl Hein’s temporary spell at Werder Bremen has been cut short due to a serious hand injury sustained in training last week.
The 23-year-old Estonia international has now returned to London where he underwent surgery on Tuesday. His season at the German club is officially over.
Hein had moved to Bremen hoping to gain valuable first-team experience after falling down the pecking order at Arsenal following the arrival of Kepa Arrizabalaga. Unfortunately the move has not worked out as planned with just two appearances, the last coming back in October.
Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune said: “I feel incredibly sorry for Karl. He’s a top goalkeeper who has fully embraced his role with us and given everything in every single training session. We hope the operation and the rehabilitation afterwards go well and that he can get back on the pitch as soon as possible. We’ll support him in every way we can.”
The timing is not ideal for the player as his Arsenal contract is due to expire this summer. It remains to be seen how long he will be sidelined by the injury.
